History

The New Mexico Brewers Guild began in the mid-1990s as an informal gathering of professional brewers who shared a passion for craft beer. In its early days the Guild met occasionally to share ideas, quaff experimental brews, trade ingredients, and join in friendly competition in the annual IPA Challenge. Many of these same brewers launched the Guild as an official 501(c)(6) entity in 2012. You may not know it, but as a new brewery or brewery in planning, you have already benefited by the considerable efforts of the New Mexico Brewers Guild and its members!

Managing Director and founding owner/brewer of Bosque Brewing Co. His primary responsibilities are now developing growth opportunities. He served in the roll of director of operations for Bosque Brewing Co. over the previous 3 years, and under his oversight and care, the company has grown from a small startup that produced 350 barrels in its first year to a brewery on pace to produce over 6,000 barrels this year that is being sold in 3 Bosque taprooms, 150+ draft accounts and 16 retail outlets which gives him a wide perspective as a part of a brewery team that sells beer evenly between their own taprooms and distribution accounts.

  • Jayson Wylie
Board Member, Membership Committee Chair, Events Committee, Taos Mesa Brewing Co.

Jayson Wylie, head brewer and managing partner of Taos Mesa Brewing, was originally turned onto craft beer while serving in US Army. German beers were certainly a catalyst for the US craft movement, as well Wylie’s passion for good beer.  While studying history at the University of Kansas, Wylie spent a great deal of time “researching” at The Free State Brewing Co—founded in 1989, this was the first legal brewery in the state of Kansas in over 100 years. It was here that Wylie cemented his fondness of craft beer, as well as beginning his self-education in brewing science.  Post-graduation in 1999, Wylie relocated to Taos, NM where he continued his zymurgical quest home brewing. In 2012, Wylie turned his hobby into a profession as one of the founders of Taos Mesa Brewing Co. Now, with 3 locations in Taos, Taos Mesa Brewing is on track to produce 2000 bbl this year, with their eye on the distribution market. PROST!

A native New Yorker that transplanted to NM in 2002 to follow a girl and teach Music, Jeff began following his dreams of brewing beer for a living a decade ago, and in 2010, he founded La Cumbre Brewing Co. in Albuquerque, NM. In 2012, Jeff helped to organize the New Mexico Brewers Guild and served on the Board of Directors until 2016. During his tenure, Jeff worked closely with other Board members, legislators and lobbyists to pass excise tax reform, and create an Albuquerque Brewery District. As the technical director for the Guild, Jeff organized the first two Technical Conferences, bringing dozens of the state’s brewers together to grow and learn from one another. Jeff has served as a judge at the Great American Beer Festival since 2011, has spoken at the Craft Brewers Conference, and presented seminars and classes at several Universities and trade shows on subjects as varied as food safety compliance, utility infrastructure and yeast care. In addition to his responsibilities at La Cumbre Brewing Co., Jeff spends his weekends corralling two wonderful little boys with his wife Laura.

A native of the Rochester, NY area, John grew up drinking local beer from a medium-size regional brewery that survived prohibition and the ensuing consolidation of the American brewing industry. That’s right – he grew up drinking local beer – back in the days when a youngster could take a sip from his Dad’s tin can of Genesee beer without causing so much as a raised eyebrow.
Now, after many years as a brewery owner and operator, John spends his time providing advice – often unsolicited – to his former peers and new industry members.
